Day One at the Con

Randal and I rocked our "How Not To Break Into Comics" panel. I was amazed by the line outside the panel room and thought it might be for something else. But it was not. The room was packed, and people were actually turned away, including Faith Erin Hicks, creator of Zombies Calling, who was so nice as to try to come to the panel. But she's already broken into comics, so that's OK.
We talked about not doing your research, not dedicating yourself to the medium, not developing your talent, and being a weirdo or a jerk. It's too bad the panel wasn't later in the con because I promptly met some people wanting submission guidelines or portfolio reviews who could have benefited from it. I expect to write more about them later, in my PW column, perhaps.
I talked with tiredfairy for some time about the many woes and perks of comics life, saw Adrienne and Jim, ruined three hotel towels already with my hair.
This morning, I rode an elevator with Sergio Aragones. He asked when the convention. I said nine-thirty, he said, "Ay ay ay," and I said, "That's what I said."
Which is true. It is what I said.
Soaked the feet in the hot tub and decided to save my energy for the weekend. This is how I ended the day at the convention:

I saw THE DARK KNIIIIIIGHT or whatever it's called. It was pretty disturbing. I must be included in that group of "faint of heart" people, I guess. But, it was quite good, and Heath Ledger's performance lived up to the gossip, in my opinion.
Man, readership and comments and everything are so bad in summer! I'm mostly perplexed that people are faving it on Smackjeeves faster than ever, lately. It's completely out of nowhere, but I'm glad about it. Let's get Heard on the first page!
Tomorrow I go to the dentist and get some cavities drilled. It's going to be a pretty horrible ordeal, and I don't anticipate having the energy or motivation to get a page done. I'll go cry to mah friendie Alma and she'll distract me from my sorrows.

Think Pink!

The plus side of my new day job is that I can have any color hair I so desire. (One of the other girls that works there has blue hair, and the other one recently had green...) So naturally, my hair is once again Manic Panic Hot Hot Pink. (It's my color of choice. When I can't find that one, Manic Panic Fuschia Shock is my other pink-hair-default.) I'd post pictures, but honestly, I'm in my PJ's, it's my day off, and I'm seriously rocking the no makeup/bags under the eyes look. Plus, I'm not your photo monkey. XD
I'm well pleased to be back to the pink. Not so pleased: I managed to dye my thumbs hot hot pink as well. As usual, I wore gloves for the dying and most of the rinsing process. But of course, not being able to feel if I'd gotten all the dye out of my hair made me strip off the gloves before I was done rinsing. Thus, pink thumbs.
(Pro-tip: I always leave my Manic Panic in for at least three hours or more. This time, I left it in for about four or five. I leave it until it's dry and my hair feels crunchy. I think it sets the color better, and seems to make it last longer. Second Pro-tip: if you get Manic Panic on your skin, Sea-Breeze on a cotton ball gets it right off.)
Pink hair makes me very happy. It helps, since despite working on unpacking all day, the apartment is still in a state of chaos, with many important things hidden in unknown boxes. I need to get back to eBay and FurBid, but can't find my records books for same. And, the apartment management still needs to get me my damn mail key. It's been a week! I informed them today that preventing me access to my mail not only was in violation of the lease contract they also signed, but was a federal offense. And that I would take it up with the local post office if they didn't get me a key asap. I ain't playin' around, even if I do have pink hair.Current Mood: busy

Log of the Demeter
24 July. – There seems some doom over this ship. Already a hand short, and entering the Bay of Biscay with wild weather ahead, and yet last night another man lost - disappeared. Like the first, he came off his watch and was not seen again. Men all in a panic of fear; sent a round robin, asking to have double watch, as they fear to be alone. Mate violent. Fear there will be some trouble, as either he or the men will do some violence.

It's been raining all day today, and I'd far rather be curled up in bed with a good book and some spicy tea than trying to force myself to work. Got a little bit done, but it seems one of those days where you just realize you need to give in and let the angels rest. It seems trouble after trouble wants to pile up, and you just have to keep mucking through the mud and trying to make it to the other side.
I feel so powerless sometimes. Powerless against the wave of the world. Powerless against fate. Powerless against myself. But sometimes, thinking about it, my powerlessness gives me strength, makes me realize how much is out of my hands and in the hands of my Creator.
Lately, I've been struggling a lot with my faith. Not in the usual way. Not religiously. But faith in my ability to recognize and distinguish between my inner voices. There's a voice that leads me--the voice of hopes and dreams--and a voice that pushes me from behind, the voice of my fears and past experiences.
Does G*d give us signs? Signs that seem so clear that they should be impossible to dismiss and yet we ignore them anyway? When we ask for a sign and G*d gives it, what if we decide not to follow it? Pursuing immediate personal happiness in sacrifice of the bigger picture we can't see yet? It's the dilemma I face and the question I ask. My heart is in turmoil.
----- This has nothing to do with work, btw. I'll always be making comics. Not doubts there. :)I'm listening to: Bruce Springsteen - "Devils & Dust"

I got to meet Rebecca Guay and bought an original pen/ink sketch from her.
Got one of Dave Dorman's Highlander Covers (Duncan in his Texas Ranger days) and this really nifty piece Scott Hampton did for a Magic set.
Took a picture of Dean Haglund's butt. (In joke at the Rolling Thunder booth.) Incidentally, he won a silver medal at a rather prestigious inventors conference for computer widget he invented. (One of the Lone Gunmen really is *that* geeky IRL.)
Bumped into ... alright, stood in the hall and waited for Naomi, Lynn, and Janean. The Authors what steal from bits of history panel was pretty damn funny and it's really cool to watch authors try to outquip each other.
Cursed the slow internet connection at the Prism Booth. (But had fun all the same.)
Bought a gift for my hunny -- Tofu: The Vegan Zombie.
Tomorrow: I go as Mazikeen from the Lucifer series. Probably only 3 people in the building will get who I am, but why the hell not? |

Grammy fall O_O

My grandmother (grammy) practically raised me growing up. She was always there after my parents divorced, so she's like a second mother to me (even though my mom and dad were around and attentive). Adam and I lived with her for five years after our marriage before we got our own place.
She has been living with Adam and me for about a month now. We've been keeping an eye on her, making sure she's eating right, etc. So yesterday, she and I were out doing a couple errands and while we were at the post office she passed out and fell on the hard concrete there. We had to go to the emergency room and were at the hospital from three in the afternoon until nine-thirty at night, then this morning from eight to one waiting to hear from the doctor. Late this evening she was released and we got her home. Luckily she has no fractures or breaks, but she has severe back pain from the fall. They think she might have passed out because of either the heat and being a bit dehydrated or from the Arecept (for her memory loss), so they're taking her off that med just to be sure. I just hope she heals fast because she's in so much pain right now she cries when she tries to get up and walk. She has to put most of her weight on me to get her from here to there.Current Mood: distressed

The Guts Of Dr Horrible
|
Jul. 25th, 2008 @ 12:01 am
|
|---|
|
So, Dr Horrible, then. Unless you were offline during the month of July 2008, you heard about DR HORRIBLE’S SING-ALONG BLOG: a musical comedy film produced for the internet by Joss Whedon, a man who has yet to be properly punished for once calling me his "youngling." Written by Joss, his brothers Zack (who co-wrote a pleasing episode of DEADWOOD) and Jed and Maurissa Tancharoen. A musical comedy, in fact, about a small-time mad scientist supervillain, the superhero he hates, and the Tess Trueheart drawn between them.
I only watched the end of it, because, as much as I love Joss, I hate musicals. Musical comedy makes my balls itch, frankly. And no-one wants that. It’s one of the things Joss and I will never agree on (like, you know, my being his youngling. Which I am not. At all). I think Gilbert & Sullivan are a cultural curiosity at best and I like ALL THAT JAZZ because Roy Scheider dies at the end. Joss believes that Gilbert & Sullivan are culturally relevant (and presumably still washes his clothes in a stream and goes on ether frolics) and is friendly with Stephen Sondheim.
But it was a lovely little production. Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion are always watchable, and some of the non-musical gags were inspired. (I actually later went back to the earlier episodes for the Bad Horse stunts.) And, clearly, it was forty-five minutes that delighted a great many people.
(Not interested in the fanwank about the ending, nor in Dr Steel losing his shit, so don’t even think about bringing me any of that. You’ll go right into the spam filter.)
Most interesting to me, though, are the guts of the idea. Joss Whedon blowing his savings account on staging a 45-minute serial for the internet (that will doubtless prove to be i2dvd — internet to dvd — apologies once again to Bill Cunningham for perverting his "d2dvd" coinage).
I was crapping away here the other day about the ratio of linkblogs to people actually producing original content. And then Joss blows a couple hundred grand on not only producing a bit of original content with unusually high production values, but also an Internet Event. It was free to view if you attended within a stated time window. It was in fact Appointment Internet. That is not something that many people have ever managed.
And while there are elements of the project that only someone of Joss’ position could pull off — the money, the cast, the values, etc etc etc — I think there are still lessons to be taken from it that apply broadly. Not least of which are, Be Short, Be Bold, and Get It Done.
I can’t tell you how many new hopeful comics writers I meet who have never finished anything in their lives because their intended first project is a hundred-episode epic that creates a whole new universe or three. And I tell them all the same thing: you’re screwed. No-one will want it. Not until you’ve written something short, capable of being produced on a budget, and finished. Your epic may be worldchanging, but no-one will ever know because no publisher will gamble that kind of money on an unknown. And that’s before you get to the vagaries of the attention economy.
Production values are nice, but not necessary to producing compelling work. People gave Dr Horrible 15 mins because it’s Joss, but five minutes is a great length for net video. 500 words, 5 pages, whatever. Be short. Be great.
And if you can get an evil horse in there, that’d be good, too.

So I'm sitting in the industry lounge and I have ten minutes, so here's a quick laydown of yesterday...
I woke up with no hangover which was a shock, and found a sleeping Bart Thompson, who'd slunk in during the night. We goit up to the beautiful sound of a construction site, and needless to say, we got ourselves moved pretty damned quick. Now in the new room, we sorted ourselves out and, after a healthy (yeah, right) breakfast in Coronado at a rather nice diner, we made our way down the sun swept streets, looking in surf shops and generally relaxing.

From there we sorted ourselves out and made our way, via water taxi to the convention center to gain our professional accreditation. Now usually this involves a very long queue and a lot of stress, but this year? We arrived fifteen minutes early, were put in the 'barcode printed out forms' line where a smiley girl took my details and boom! within three minutes, we were sorted. I kid you not.
So from there we wandered down to the Bondi Australian bar for a drink and then down to the Hyatt Lobby bar where to my delight the Mets were on the plasma screens playing live. I was no good to anyone until they dragged me out at 6pm and I made my way to preview night.
The comic con on it's quietest day? Looks like this.

Yeah, scary, huh? But this was a more crowded area due to the unveiling of the Owlship from Watchmen...

I managed to get to see quite a few people including Chris Ryall of IDW who provided me with two pre-press copies of the Doctor Who comic - this was a surprise as we didn't think it was released yet, and it was a joy to finally hold in my hands, and there's like four total in the entire convention...

But tonight wasn't pitches or meetings, it was a chance to catch up and say hi to old friends. And after it was over I managed to get back to the Hyatt with Sean and Bart where we ended up drinking with Dan Taylor and Jacen Burrows to name but a couple.
Just as I was about to go back to the hotel room, I had a pleasant surprise. Jimmy Aquino turned up. I love the guy to death, but we recently made a challenge - a different vest / shirt / tie combo every day. And this was day one. And Jimmy? Well, he looked like this.

'Nuff said. I rock.
Anyway, by now it was 2am and Sean was falling asleep at the table, so we made our way back where I pretty much passed out.
And now I must run because I have a meeting and there are some very scary people in here. See you tomorrow, kiddies! |

You are a Firebender! The first firebenders were taught by Dragons. To the Fire Nation, fire represented destruction and anger was central to firebending. True firebending involves balance, emotional stability and inner calm, as fire truly represents life. Firebending draws its power from the sun and is stronger during the day, strongest during Sozin’s comet which arrives every hundred years. Firebending is not possible during a solar eclipse.
